Mediagraphy
2022

Mediagraphy is a final-year project focused on redesigning the Ankara Station Casino in Ankara, Turkey. The aim is to preserve the historical significance of the building by adapting it for contemporary use. Given the Casino's important place in Ankara’s history, Mediagraphy seeks to retain the essence of the building and its context.

Concept

The main concept of the design is inspired by the Ginkgo Biloba tree, located in the garden of the building, which symbolizes “forever, not forgetting.” This concept aligns perfectly with the project's goal of preserving and sharing historical memories.

Program

The program focuses on creating a space where young and old generations can meet and share memories and experiences, ensuring they are not forgotten. A key activity is the "memory hunting" event, where participants take photographs of interior and exterior places in Ankara, especially along the cultural axis. This event occurs during the first two weeks of autumn and spring, paralleling the Ginkgo Biloba tree’s seasonal cycle—shedding leaves in autumn and thriving in spring.

After taking photos, participants gather in the workshop area to develop their photographs, some of which will be showcased in a digital media exhibition. Throughout the year, the media hub remains open for photo washing, printing, and photography seminars.

Design Approach

The design employs a layering concept, both horizontally (between floors) and vertically (with panels), inspired by the layers of a photograph. The organizational layout is central, drawing inspiration from the structure and stance of the Ginkgo Biloba tree.
